Welcome

I would like to warmly welcome you to St Michael’s Catholic Primary School.

Located in the town of Houghton-le-Spring, the parish of St. Michael’s began educating children in 1880 as a senior school. 1912 saw the opening of an infant school. The modern building you see today was opened in 2000 and is home to up to 210 children, aged 4-11.

We are part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust and enjoy working collaboratively with other schools from within the Trust. We hope that you enjoy finding out more about our school through the website. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school office or call in for a visit.

Our Values

As teachers we aim to develop our pupils as fully as possible. In many of these areas we will be working hand in hand with you as parents in educating responsible citizens for the future.

We demonstrate our Ethos throughout our school mission statement, ‘Learning together in faith and love, we shine as children of God’.

The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister this year. The DfE has recently reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values.’

Letters

We send out letters and newsletters on a regular basis to keep parents up to date with school decisions and progress.

At St Michael's, we keep our parents, carers and families informed about upcoming events and celebrations of our children's successes. We regularly publish a newsletter, which is sent out electronically to all of our parents and is made available on this page. We also use Social media to share the very latest events, learning and religious celebrations that take place within our school.

Year 5 had a lovely trip looking at signs of erosion as part of their Geography topic. They started the day @nationaltrust Souter Lighthouse learning all about the lighthouse and looking out from the very top. They then went to Seaham beach to find signs of erosion on the beach!
