Collective Worship

Why Collective Worship is important at St. Michael’s

Collective Worship at St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School is far more than a statutory requirement. It is crucial to the spiritual life of our school and to our pupils’ moral and spiritual development. We regard Collective Worship as a vital part of our school’s distinctive Catholic ethos.

As a worshipping school community, St. Michael’s takes part in daily Collective Worship which helps build community cohesion by creating a consistent structure around our core values and symbols of Christianity. Being a Catholic school, pupil participation and engagement in worship are important criteria in the diocesan inspection of Catholic education, not least during the daily act of collective worship. From Reception to Year 6, pupils are invited to play an active part in Collective Worship.

Throughout the academic year, our St. Michael’s school community comes together to celebrate important events in the Church’s calendar, such as Lent and Advent. Through regular prayer and worship, including Mass, the rhythm of the Church’s year becomes a normal part of school life and each pupil’s life.

How is Collective Worship structured at St. Michael’s?

Here at St. Michael’s Catholic Primary School Collective Worship is meticulously planned and resourced to ensure that delivery is high quality, the content is rich and the impact is highly effective.

Please see below the format of our weekly Collective Worship time…

Monday – Celebration of the Word including Mission Monday

This prayer time will follow a four-part structure of Gather, Word, Respond and Mission. The scripture is taken from Sunday’s Gospel. Children are given a Mission to live out to take their faith into action. This is revisited at the end of the school week during Celebration Assembly.

Tuesday – Catholic Social Teaching

This is an opportunity for creative prayer following different themes linked to the world and Catholic Social Teaching.

Wednesday – Child-led Celebration of the Word

Our wonderful pupils plan and lead this as much as possible according to their age and ability. Pupils are given the opportunity to choose how they Gather, the Word (from scripture), how they Respond, their Mission, their sacred space, and any other resources they wish to use. This is recorded in Class Prayer and Liturgy books. Families are invited at different points across the academic year to take part.

Thursday – Prayer and Praise

An opportunity for our pupils to learn and sing hymns and to pray through song and sometime dance.

Friday – Celebrating our God-given Gifts and Talents Assembly

Our whole school community gathers together to celebrate their learning and achievements from that week. We link our successes and achievements as God-given gifts and talents and we thank God for these. Pupils are given an opportunity to reflect on their Mission from Monday and to pray for the week they have had.
